Research Industrial Systems Engineering (RISE) Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Großprojektberatung GmbH is an IT consulting, service, and software development company active around the globe. It was founded as a spin-off of the Vienna University of Technology and boasts more than 25 years of experience in IT operations, software development, and IT projects. The reference service portfolio covers various sectors such as banking and finance, mobile communications, telecommunications, corporate information systems, corporate IT, security technology, the environment and the technological fields of software engineering, web engineering, mobile engineering, usability engineering, interactive systems, IT security, test automation, and network technology.
Challenges
E-government is becoming increasingly well-established in the German healthcare sector. A prime example is gematik’s electronic prescription, for which RISE developed and operates the Identity Provider Service (IDP). The IDP is the central nationwide security service responsible for verifying the identity of all participants and securing access to medical data. In 2020, RISE sought a suitable partner to host the IT operations for this solution. Maximum availability, comprehensive certifications, geo-redundancy, compliance with environmental standards, and energy efficiency had to be ensured across the board. In addition, the data protection and IT security requirements crucial to the healthcare sector had to be met, particularly since the project involves the processing of sensitive patient data.
Solution
noris network was identified as the ideal European partner for RISE, as the provider meets all formal requirements and has a decidedly collaborative mindset. As a data center operator and IT service provider with locations in Nuremberg, Munich, and Hof, noris network was awarded the contract because they comprehensively meet all of gematik’s requirements. Thanks to its connection to the geo-redundant data centers, the current service operation features cross-location IT security and high availability. Moreover, the high standards of noris network in terms of energy management and sustainability fully satisfied the involved parties. The contract ensures that the processed data remains in Europe, while also supporting medium-sized companies in Europe.
Project Success
The success of the project is characterized in particular by the fact that the
smooth and trouble-free operation of the identity provider service (IDP) for the e-prescription in Germany has been maintained without any critical incidents since it was launched in July 2021. In addition, the fulfillment of high service availability requirements contributed significantly to the positive outcome of the project. The result is an efficient and straightforward management of daily tasks and the provision of “remote hands” services by noris network. To prepare for the future, project partners RISE and noris network recently expanded capacity in the noris network data centers in Munich and Nuremberg.
