Lufthansa WorldShop GmbH with the webshop www.worldshop.eu is a division of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and gives participants in the Miles & More frequent flyer program the opportunity to use award miles for goods in the online store. The range includes products from the areas of Travel & Luggage, Entertainment & Media, Home & Living, Lifestyle & Accessories, Sports & Wellness, Kids & Fun and Lufthansa & Aviation.
Challenge
At www.worldshop.eu, participants in the Miles & More frequent flyer program can purchase a wide range of high-quality branded products, from aircraft models and suitcases to sports equipment, consumer electronics and wines, and also pay with award miles. Around 20,000 visitors, between 200,000 and 300,000-page impressions per day and a complex, mixed payment system (award miles and cash) make the five-language web store www.worldshop.eu technically demanding.
Solution
After the previous contract had expired, Lufthansa WorldShop GmbH put the hosting of the web store out to tender. The infrastructure proposed by noris network AG was awarded the contract. Six dedicated Linux servers are operated in two lines with high availability using the shared load balancer. The underlying MySQL database is located on servers with fast solid state disks instead of conventional hard disks.
Project success
The webshop went online in the noris network data center a month earlier than agreed and has been running smoothly ever since. Thanks to its active monitoring, the service provider was able to alert the webshop operator to potential performance bottlenecks and thus prevent problems that might otherwise have occurred as a result of extreme increases in access during promotional campaigns.
