City of Nuremberg

The lively and ancient city of Nuremberg is known for its picturesque historic city center, which is characterized by medieval buildings and the famous imperial castle. The Nuremberg city administration ensures sustainable urban development and promotes economic innovation as well as cultural diversity. Using modern IT systems, the city administration creates added value for its roughly 530,000 inhabitants.

Challenge

In 2022, the city of Nuremberg decided to modernize its IT infrastructure. The IT managers of the metropolis located in south-eastern Germany had stringent requirements, including an exceptionally high level of data protection and data security, maximum system availability, and a service provider with a high level of certification. Moreover, energy management and sustainability goals also put the colocation project to the test, both in terms of technology and cost performance. One of the key reasons was the strict EU Energy Efficiency Act about to come into force.

Solution

As part of the colocation project, the city uses a dedicated cage with rack spaces and cabling in accordance with DIN EN 50174 and DIN EN 50176 standards as well as DIN EN 50600-2-4 in section 2 of noris network’s Nuremberg South data center. This gives the city access to a professional and reliable infrastructure without having to bear the costs of setting up, maintaining, and staffing its own data center environment. Physical security is ensured by hermetic perimeter protection, multi-level security zones, and a specially trained 24/7 security service.

Project Success

The colocation site at noris network provides the city with a flexible, scalable, and future-proof IT infrastructure without having to compromise on data protection and data security. The city of Nurnberg can also rest easy when it comes to energy efficiency: While the old data center had a PUE value of 2, the sophisticated energy management system from noris network with a PUE value of 1.2 ensures compliance with legal requirements. Moreover, the goal of becoming CO2 neutral by 2040 is also within reach.
